The City of Lenexa is actively hiring for a full-time Street Maintenance Worker to come join the Municipal Services (Public Works) team. Any work outside of the normal hours is typically known well in advance for things such as our festivals and events. While there is less notice for snow events, information regarding schedules and expectations are shared as early as possible as snow and ice enter the forecast.

The Steet Maintenance Worker position is an entry level position that is responsible for maintaining the street infrastructure in Lenexa, KS. We will provide you with on-the-job training and help you earn your CDL. You will have the opportunity to learn and grow through the maintenance worker career track program to achieve levels I, II, and III.

The Street Crew maintains Lenexa-s street network of approximately 820 lane miles of roads and 36.78 miles of hiking/biking trails. Maintenance of the streets and trails includes sidewalk repairs, street sweeping, pothole patching, broken curb repair, mill and overlay, and micro/slurry sealing. The Streets Division is also responsible for the Pavement Management Program (https://www.lenexa.com/City-Services/Public-Improvement-Projects/Street-Sidewalk-Trail-Projects/Pavement-Management-Program) , Snow and ice removal (https://www.lenexa.com/City-Services/Streets-Transportation-Traffic/Snow-and-Ice-Removal) , Dumpster Days (https://www.lenexa.com/Your-Residence/Trash-Utilities/Dumpster-Days) and emergency response during natural disasters. The Streets crews contribute to maintaining the high standards set for the appearance of the City of Lenexa - many times seeing the immediate results of their hard work!

Position Summary

The Street Maintenance I position is an entry-level semi-skilled work in maintaining street surfaces, road bases, curbs and gutters, trails, sidewalks and snow and ice control. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Street Foreman, serving on a work crew of five or fewer.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Asphalt maintenance and paving: Responsible for milling, removal, crack sealing, base failure repairs, patching pothole repairs and the paving of sections of roadways.

  • Concrete maintenance: Responsible for removal, patching, leveling and replacement of sidewalks, pads, curbs and gutters.

  • Snow/Ice maintenance: Responsible for the ice and snow removal on City roadways and parking lots.

  • Performs a variety of manual labor including asphalt patching, crack sealing, pouring concrete, spreading rock, loading or unloading trucks, transporting construction material, cutting tall grass and weeds, operating snow removal equipment and compacting road base.

  • Operates trucks, single and tandem axle dump trucks, snow removal equipment, rollers, skid steer loaders, backhoes, front end loaders, concrete saws, hand and power tools, etc.

  • Performs -walk-around inspections- on equipment prior to operation, replenishes fluid levels and completes required log. Operates all machinery in a safe and judicious manner according to the manufacturer's operation manual. Cleans and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to assigned equipment as needed. Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.

  • Responds to snow and ice removal and other emergencies including weekends, before and after hours and holidays.

  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position

Qualifications

Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D. or two years of experience in a construction-related field. Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements and Work Zone Safety Certification, including Flagger, or obtain within 180 days from hire date. Must complete required NIMS IS-100 and IS-700 training within three months of employment.

Environment and Physical Factors

This is medium physical work requiring the ability to stand and walk; the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to approximately 60 lbs.; the ability to work in cramped or confined spaces; hear warning alarms, radio transmissions, etc. routinely; the ability to traverse open grounds and construction areas; the ability to step up and out of tandem truck or vehicle; and crawl, stoop, bend, climb, twist and maintain balance as needed. This position requires the ability to work in extreme weather conditions of all kinds; the ability to tolerate exposure to pollen, traffic and machine exhaust; the ability to tolerate exposure to smoke from prescribed burning; and the ability to work safely in hazardous situations.

Salary/Compensation and Benefits

The hiring range for the Park Maintenance Worker I is $18.85 to $21.22 per hour.
