Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician for the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Under broad guidance and direction, functions as the group leader and instructor for laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, and students of a large university laboratory and/or teaching program. Provides professional-level laboratory technical support involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques. Performs and oversees the performance of multistage purifications, other assays, and tests; the propagation of non-animal specimens and cell cultures; the preparation of tissues, chemicals, and/or living subjects for testing; may perform the breeding of small animals; and related duties.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Oversees, operates, and maintains departmental biochemical, molecular and microbiological laboratory instrumentation and equipment; trains and provides oversight of graduate/undergraduate student and postdoc laboratory personnel.
  • Actively engages in student training in research based undergraduate courses and summer undergraduate research programs.
  • Prepares reagents and solutions, inoculates, and maintains microbiological cultures as required for experimental procedures.
  • Maintains organization within the laboratory environment, including inventory management, chemical/biological safety, and equipment maintenance.
  • Works with the instructors and teaching assistants in ensuring a safe and engaging laboratory teaching environment.
  • Responsible for setting up and dismantling experiments and activities for the teaching laboratories ensuring proper equipment functioning and cleanliness.
  • Oversees the performance of scientific assays and test and maintenance of the department microbial cell culture collection.
  • Responsible for calibration of scientific instrumentation as part of quality/process control.
  • Supports faculty-led student research projects applying scientific techniques, instrumentation, and methods.
  • Conducts biochemical assays as part of the microbial characterization process in the teaching labs.
  • Orders materials and reagents for the teaching laboratories and manages chemical inventory.
  • Ensures cleanliness and organization in laboratory spaces. Safely handles and disposes of hazardous chemicals and materials, adhering to established protocols and safety guidelines. Maintains accurate records of material usage and disposal activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline.
  • A combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years laboratory technician or relevant laboratory research-study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree.
  • An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may take the place of the experience in the above combination.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.
  • Must understand the fundamentals of the science; read and understand technical documents; perform complex scientific routines, protocols, and tests; articulate data to researcher; give clear directions to others; lift and move up to 30 pounds; and operate and maintain sophisticated equipment. Requires the ability to group lead.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats. Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication to document procedures, findings, and any relevant information; Ability to follow written instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Must understand the fundamentals of biochemistry and microbiology; read and understand technical documents; perform complex scientific routines, protocols, and tests; ability to perform calculations and measurements accurately; articulate data to researchers and students; give clear directions to others.
  • Ability operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
  • Must be well organized and able to communicate effectively with the faculty and other members of the lab.
  • Displayed ability to follow laboratory safety policies.
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking and troubleshooting skills to identify and address issues that may arise during laboratory procedures.
  • Understands various biochemical and microbiological assays to make informed decisions when ordering materials/reagents and conducting test runs of assays and experiments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty members and other team members, demonstrating good interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. or M.S. degree in biochemistry or microbiology or related discipline in the life sciences.
  • Prior experience as a Lab Technician or Lab Manager.
  • Familiarity with advanced biochemical, microbiological, and molecular techniques.
Equipment Utilized
  • UV-VIS spectrophotometer, PCR thermocycler, tabletop and lab centrifuges, microscopes, biosafety cabinets, autoclave.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25lbs.
Special Conditions
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
